Desislava Staykova-Learn graduated with an interdisciplinary arts degree, ArtScience, from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts (Netherlands) in 2006. With a portfolio defined by installations and abstract films in the early years, in recent years she has turned her attention stronger to photography, focusing on several long-term research projects around various topics of interest. Staykova-Learn’s fascination is to examine our environment and discover constructs which may remain hidden to the regular eye – then reveal them to the viewer, inviting them to question their environment, imagine alternate realities, and examine the world outside as well as the world inside themselves.
Most recently, Staykova-Learn was chosen as 2020 International Honoree of the Women In The Arts competition (USA). In 2021 she was awarded with Certificate of Artistic Merit by the Luxembourg Art Prize (Luxembourg).
The ArcAb series is one of Staykova-Learn’s ongoing projects focusing on architectural abstraction. The images capture places and constructs existing in real life, yet revealed in an entirely new way through the use of perspective, scale, composition and timing of capture, essentially crafting each work authentically on- site. The ArcAb pieces are often paired in diptychs or triptychs, showing moments of a story as it unfolds.
